When Edward C. Johnson II became president and director of the small, Boston-based Fidelity Fund in 1943, he instituted an approach to money management that remains the hallmark of Fidelity's investment culture today. Mr. Johnson believed that making money for shareholders was best accomplished through intensive market research and through fund management by individuals, not investment committees. More than half-century later, that same commitment to bottom-up research and active portfolio management is at the heart of Fidelity's money management approach.

Investment Philosophy and Style

Fidelity's globally integrated research team enables them to seize opportunities in world financial markets the moment they arise.

They believe that this considerable advantage can translate to strength in every asset class, giving financial advisors more ways to help diversify their clients' portfolios than nearly anyone else.  Fidelity's dedication to advisors and their clients has helped them become one of the largest, most respected investment firms in business today.

Fidelity follows a bottom-up, company-by-company approach to investing. Each portfolio is built one investment at a time based on extensive fundamental analysis, a rigorous process of security selection, and disciplined, active portfolio management. Fidelity analysts and managers pursue only what they believe to be the most solid securities for a Fidelity portfolio. These experienced investment professionals are backed by a worldwide network of research resources providing constant market and company information:

  • Extensive online, computer-based research tools. This includes a proprietary, personal computer-based operating system that gives Fidelity portfolio managers instant access from anywhere in the world to Wall Street brokerage research and earnings models, SEC filings, trading information and research notes on thousands of companies worldwide.
  • A common system linking Fidelity trading desks in Boston, Hong Kong, London and Tokyo that tracks all orders and trades, helping Fidelity’s international traders match buyers and sellers of securities more quickly and efficiently than ever before.
  • A state-of-the-art trading desk, which provides access to more than 200 brokerage houses and real-time information to achieve the best executions and optimize the value of each transaction.

Attributes

  • Fidelity Management & Research Company (FMR Co.) employs the largest staff of portfolio managers, analysts and traders in the industry, more than 500 in total.
